Magaga Alot – Member
Mr. MAGAGA ALOT, Kenyan writer, journalist and Corporate Strategy and Communications Specialist was born in 1949 in Ujwang’a village, Sakwa Bondo, Siaya County. His literary career started back in 1970 when his commissioned play, Heat of the Moment, was selected and staged as part of the cultural celebrations of the Inauguration of the University of Nairobi. His other publications include People and Communication in Kenya the novels, A Girl Cannot Go on Laughing All the Time; and Daughter of State. He has contributed to Perspectives on Regional Integration and Co-operation in East Africa; The Rise and Rise of East African Community; and Journey Towards Regional Integration in East Africa, among the publications that he edited or co-authored with others. Alot received his education at the Kenyatta College, Nairobi; Diploma in Journalism, University of Nairobi and MSc in Management and Organization, United States International University.
Prior to his current appointment as Member of the Board of Siaya County Public Service Board, Alot had an extensive career at national, regional and international levels: From 1972 – 1974 as reporter and editor for among others the East African Standard, Daily Nation and Sunday Post; Correspondent of The Times of London; Correspondent / Associate Editor of the London-based Africa and New African magazines; Correspondent of the Daily News, Dar es Salaam; and Producer/Presenter, Voice of Kenya Radio and TV; and 1975-1987 as Information Officer of the United Nations with postings to New York, Nairobi/ focal point for dissemination of information on Decolonization and struggle against Apartheid and Racial Discrimination; Addis Ababa, Geneva/OAU-UN ICARA Secretariat; and Brussels/ UN Consultant and Special Assistant to the Secretary General, African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group.
Subsequently, Alot served as Public Relations Manager of Kenya Commercial Bank (1987-1997); Head of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs of the East African Community (EAC), Arusha, Tanzania, 1987 -2009 (including major assignments as EAC Representative in the Dialogues and Conference on the AU and New Strategies for Development in Africa; Delegate to the Blair Commission; Delegate to the Steering Committee of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region) ; EU Expert to the EAC on Regional Integration (2009-2012); Founder Director, Parchment Communications; and USAID Consultant on the development of the EAC Lake Victoria Basin Outreach and Communication Strategy (2014-2015).
